Sweet orange is one of the most cultivated fruit trees in the world, and its fruits are widely popular. It may surprise to know that this tree, which is not of wild origin, is a hybrid between the grapefruit or pomelero tree (Citrus grandis) and the mandarin tree (Citrus reticulata). The word “orange” seems to come from the Arabic Narang, which in turn is derived from the Sanskrit Nāraṅga or Nagarañja Small orange flowers, known as orange blossom flowers, grow alone or in groups of 2 to 6. Each has 5 sepals with several yellow-tipped stamens, and white petals. They are very aromatic. From them oranges develop, round fruits of about 6.5-9.5 centimeters in diameter with thick, waxy skin and color that goes from green to intense orange. They have a white inner layer, and then a pulp composed of 10-14 segments that contain juice. Its pulp is sweet and sour, and is eaten fresh, in desserts, jams, preserves or dishes. Even alcoholic drinks are made. The juice is very refreshing and with the essential oils some edible products are flavored. Orange is very rich in vitamin C, folic acid, lutein, potassium, fiber, flavonoids and antioxidants, and is attributed digestive and purifying properties of the blood. It is believed that it can reduce cholesterol levels and that limonene reduces the risk of getting breast cancer.
