Long lived and extremely hard wooded. A tree with bold texture that will stand out in the landscape. As the tree matures it develops white bark. From literature this is the tree from Where The Red Fern Grows. a favorite tree of mine personally and the species I chose to shade the west side of my own home. Many mature specimens can be seen in St Louis where it was extensively planted as street trees 100 years ago. Hardy to USDA zones 4 through 9. Native to the eastern 2/3 of the US. Tolerant of wet and poorly drained sites and has excellent drought tolerance as well. Tolerant of urban planting conditions and poor soils as well.
