AUCTION NOT OPEN TO BIDDERS FROM CA, OR, WA, or HI Cathaya argyrophylla, or Chinese Cathaya tree is a SUPER RARE conifer that looks similar in appearance to the Umbrella Pine Sciadopitys verticillata. This tree was thought to be extinct until it was found growing in an isolated location in Southern China during a 1950s expedition. This species is endangered and it is estimated that only between 500-1000 naturalized trees exist today. Although you would never guess it, Cathaya is actually a distant relative to Pseudotsuga (Douglas Fir) and Larix (Larch). Some years ago, we experimented at our nursery grafting Cathaya onto Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings. This will form a pyramidal tree that is about 10’ in height and 8’ in diameter in 10 years. Hardy to USDA zone 5. This auction is for one 2 year old grafted tree growing in a 1 gallon pot. The tree for auction is the actual tree in the photographs. This tree is approximately 11″ tall and 7″ wide. It should be noted, our grafting success rate is very low when grafting Cathaya. We are happy to graft 100 and get 15 to live. However, once the trees are grafted, they appear to grow well without any type of reversion at the graft union. We keep the Douglas Fir foliage on for at least the first three years. This tree for sale has some Douglas Fir branches coming from the root stock. We highly recommend keeping those branches on for at least another year before removing the Douglas Fir branches entirely. The tree will be shipped in it’s 1 gallon container. We ship on Mondays and Tuesdays via 3-day Priority Mail USPS. This ensures the trees will arrive to you by weeks end and not spend a weekend at the post office. This sale is only open to United States bidders. Also, due to phytosanitary restriction regulations, we do not ship to Oregon, California, Washington state, or Hawaii. Please do not bid if you do not live in the U.S. or if you live in one of those three states. Also, please note that a 7% sales tax will be applied to bidders from the state of New Jersey. No sales tax will be applied to buyers outside of New Jersey. We are experienced growers of rare and unusual trees. Bid with confidence. We provide a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If for any reason you are unhappy with the tree when you receive it, simply return it on a Monday or Tuesday of the week following your receipt of the tree, in its original condition, and we’ll reimburse the purchase price (not to include original or return shipping/handling costs incurred).
